Mountain
Ridges and gullies divide the flora
Exposure changes quickly between sunlit slopes and shaded channels. Treat these as separate habitats even when they occur at the same elevation.
02
Route
Short stops build a better survey
Select safe observation points through woodland, open grassland and rocky upper slopes. Repeat the same notes at each stop: altitude, aspect, substrate and moisture.

Detail
Include the base of the plant
Basal leaves and growth form are often hidden by neighbouring vegetation. A careful photograph from ground level can resolve more than a close-up of the flower.
