01
Gradient
Sea-facing slopes to high ground
Moist air, aspect and elevation combine to produce marked changes over a relatively short route. Woodland edges, stream-cut shade and open summit ground deserve separate field notes.
02
Weather
Cloud changes what is visible
Low cloud can keep upper slopes cool while also shortening visibility and making exposed paths slippery. Build time into a field day for safe stops and patient close observation.
03
Practice
Compare both sides of the mountain
Where access allows, observations from different aspects reveal how exposure changes flowering time, plant stature and the balance between woody cover and open turf.
