From woodland to open rock

Pangeo’s plant cover changes with height, aspect and disturbance. Forest clearings, road edges and natural rock openings should be recorded separately rather than treated as one broad mountain habitat.

Small ledges hold distinct communities

Cracks and stable limestone shelves collect fine soil while remaining exposed to sun and wind. Compact saxifrages and other rock specialists are best photographed with both close detail and a wider habitat frame.

Comparison

Use repeated stops

Make observations at consistent elevation intervals. A sequence of short, well-labelled stops gives a clearer picture of the mountain than a long species list without habitat context.
