Flora of Mount Smolikas
A field guide to Greece’s second-highest mountain, emphasizing how geology and exposure shape the vegetation above the forest.

01
Bedrock
Substrate is part of the identification
Smolikas includes ground that differs chemically from the limestone common on many Greek mountains. Record rock colour, texture and loose scree carefully; substrate can explain unexpected plant assemblages.
02
Altitude
The forest edge is a moving boundary
Treeline form varies with slope, grazing and exposure. Open glades below the highest trees and broad subalpine grasslands above them should be treated as different habitats.
03
Field note
Photograph leaves as carefully as flowers
Violets and other small herbs are easier to compare when leaf shape, stipules, stem and growth form are visible. Include a scale without touching the plant.
